I wasn’t always a graphic artist. For nearly a decade I worked for a family business. We had stores all over the Southwest. Some of you may have purchased our products.
Mainly, I did sales.
I had a killer close. Don Sweet, CEO of Sweet’s Candies, asked me once, ‘Why should I buy from you? I can get this product in 2 other places right down the street.”
“Three reasons” I shot back, “My Grandma, my Aunt and Me.”
I explained that “My Grandmother, sitting right over there, has more retail experience in her little finger than all of our competitors combined. My Aunt is an amazing, creative woman who works her butt off to make the best product you can buy anywhere, at any price, and me because those two babes are teaching me everything they know.”
He bought. He knew people make the difference.
Through Shear Comfort I’ve selected locations, worked the stores, stocked warehouses, handled inventory, trained employees and dealt with licensees. I got the inside view of retail and manufacturing.
But contrary to my little story, number 3 in my 3-reason rational isn’t really me. Mom completes my troika of power teachers. A founding member of LIMA and a former marketing exec for Mattel and Warner Brothers, from Barbie to Bugs Bunny, I grew up getting the skinny from Mom about marketing and licensing! She’s still my go-to gal for biz advice.
So now that I’m a graphic artist why should you ask me to help you design your sales material?
